CANE AND BAMBOO TECHNOLOGICAL UP-GRADATION AND NETWORKING PROJECT
North East India

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched the “Cane and Bamboo Technological Upgradation and Networking Project”, covering the seven North Eastern States of India. The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India is the Executing Agency for the Project, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is the assigned Implementation Agency and a specialized body, the Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre (CBTC) is the Field Implementation Agency, responsible for project activities. The CBTC acts as the secretariat and coordination body of the Network and is the conduit for the network’s linkages. The primary target beneficiaries of the Project are the rural poor while the secondary target beneficiaries are the local Governments and non-Government institutions.

Activities performed:
  • Supervise CBTC staff, incl. CBTC Project Manager; manage functioning of CBTC on a daily basis, in close cooperation with NEC and serve as main representative of CBTC towards outside.
  • Assist UNIDO and NEC in the identification of short term national and international consultants and ovesee and coordinate their assignments, link them with C & B organization of the NE.
  • Assist UNIDO and NEC in identification of equipment for the CBTC and other nodal organization in the region
  • Develop and implement advocacy campaigns for promoting C & B sector in the NE; develop long-term business plan for CBTC and C&B sector coordination.
  • Conduct consultation for R&D activities for C & B sector development and supervise implementation of R&D activities. Conduct consultations for capacity building and technology induction strategy and monitor implementation.
  • Develop a marketing strategy for existing and new C&B products from NE and monitor implementation.
  • Devise a system for exposure and exchange for crafts people and entrepreneurs and oversee its implementation.
  • Assist UNIDO/DST/NEC in developing a detailed work plan for the sub-programme.
BAMBOO TECHNOLOGICAL SUPPORT GROUP (BTSG) FOR NATIONAL BAMBOO MISSION FOR NORTH EAST INDIA , BIHAR, JHARKHAND , ORISSA AND WEST BENGAL

Project Cost : Rs. 1.5 Crores
January 2007 - June 2011  ♦  4 Years - 5 Months
Positions held: Technical Co ordinator:
  • Visit the concerned States frequently to provide guidance in policy, organizational and technical matters.
  • Recommend/advice appropriate species of bamboo well suited to the region or the end user.
  • Compile materials for conduct of regional workshops in respect of bamboo plantations, handicraft, bamboo marketing and exports.
  • Conduct studies on different aspects of bamboo.
  • Assist the States in capacity building programmes.
  • Undertake publicity campaigns to promote the Mission objectives.
  • Document and disseminate case studies of success stories.
  • Conduct specialized Training Programmes at the Regional Level.
  • Network with various stakeholders and Institutes/Organizations/ Agencies, both in India and abroad.

As Consultant of Cane & Bamboo management , Processing and development strategies expert, the following tasks will be implemented.
  • Design & develop modern training program for the SHG representatives based on the needs and availability of local resources.
  • Conduct training for the SHGs representatives (If necessary bring cane & bamboo artisans from India within the agreed costs of the assignment).
  • Harmonize the training of SHGs with the value chain development and marketing experts.
  • Follow-up training on the gaps and also mentor the SHG reprentative interims of training at the grass roots level if possible.
